Luke Griffin on why Johnson is the right man

Post by Reliant Robin » Wed Jan 03, 2018 6:12 pm

See Luke Griffin’s excellent article on why he has absolute faith in Gary Johnson as CTFCs Manager, here on Gloucestershire Live

Great analysis and surprising stats, with some very sound reasoning.

I endorse Luke’s views entirely.

Glad you enjoyed the read wiseup. I do not know Luke personally, other than seeing his Twitter account which is @GriffinAnalysis and he has another Twitter account as the Editor for @ChanceAnalytics where his specialism is Football Analytics. He was a guest ‘CTFC fan’ writer for the Gloucestershire Echo in the particular week that I read the article which I thought was very well presented and backed up by some very keen analysis. He is a keen Cheltenham Town Football fan.

Given that GJ is contracted up to 2019, it will be interesting to look back and see what kind of legacy he leaves behind.
Will he depart having gained promotion into L1, or at least leaving us with a team capable of it.
Or will he be remembered as the manager, who assembled a team to get us back into L2, then tinkered with ot every 6 months, to keep us there.
Only time will tell

It’s an interesting debate. Gary Johnson’s illness last year was a big setback in terms of where he probably wanted to be with his rebuild of the team. Cheltenham Directors have not thrown wads of cash at the job and have left it to the Johnson brothers to find and integrate the right type of players to fit into the Johnson playing philosophy and within the pay structure laid down at Board level, which is entirely sensible based on the average gate and other revenue streams. Gary Johnson will always be looking to improve in every player position, but has to ensure any replacements remain within the carefully planned budget, and that also includes offloading other players who then become surplus to requirements. I was very pleased the Club didn’t sell Harry Pell to Blackpool because it showed CTFC was not desperate for cash, and although I think Mo Eisa will probably move to a bigger club in time, Gary Johnson will know his value and will not allow CTFC to get mugged off. Money generated from any big transfer would obviously accelerate Johnson’s options and therefore increase his chances of greater success.
